A Lot to Learn About Nothing to Lose By: Ryan Blair-Part #3/3

• Which is it, nothing to lose, or everything to lose?

NTL vs. ETL is really the duality of start-ups vs. established companies. The difference in decision making between having nothing to lose and everything to lose is vast. It’s why small nimble start-ups are beating major established brands. One management team is guarding their reputation, their shareholders, and their weekends off (ETL), while the other is willing to work harder and bet their future on a single strategy to win, or lose. A startup, by nature, should always bet the company with a nothing to lose attitude and that is why some make it, and others don’t.

My company was the startup that looked at the industry it was in, bet the company and won, and now we find ourselves with a lot to lose. I am faced with this dilemma daily, and I’m forced to process the two modalities constantly. I plan to maintain this duality indefinitely.

• Make a ‘nothing to lose’ bet.

Sometimes you have to bet against a bet. We applied this, in fact, to the technology I spoke of earlier. We launched the software product and six months later we made it obsolete by launching a mobile product to compete with it. We seed funded an investment in a start-up whose sole goal in life was to do just that, beat us. In this particular case the start-up did indeed cannibalize another major investment we made. I literally bet millions against a multi-million dollar bet. Some would call this a hedge, but in my opinion it wasn’t. Another start-up would have come to market against us one way or another, so this wasn’t a hedge, it was a ‘nothing to lose bet’ and in the end there were two winners.

Whether you are a big company or a small company ultimately your success comes down to the decisions you make and the perspective from which you make them. So, what’s your perspective, NTL or ETL?

A Lot to Learn About Nothing to Lose-By: Ryan Blair-Part #2/3

• Trust, but verify.

In my inventory case, for instance, I signed the P.O., however with the good old Ronald Reagan adage of “trust but verify” to my team. Meaning, fly to the vendor and make sure that they can stomach a $50,000,000 dollar order, and then stay there until they “stomach” it. The moral of the story? Trust, but verify every material “bet the company decision,” no matter how routine. And when I say verify, I mean beat a dead horse until the people in the room can’t stand you asking about another single detail. I’ve made a lot of mistakes because I trusted but didn’t verify. I’m a control freak when it comes to making material bets. You’re either in control or out of control when it comes to decision, and there is no middle ground. Control is a safer bet.

• It’s better to do it in phases.

Four years ago I bet the future of my company on technology that we were innovating, a web product for my sales-people that was three years ahead of its time. It was a bad bet and I had to reverse my decisions and strategy, and play like I had everything to lose. Which brings me to my next lesson…bet the company, but don’t bet the company all at once.

My technology bet did eventually pay off—on year four, which was this year. It would be real easy for me to glaze over the fact that I was off a year, but the cost of this bet resulted in my company being written down to zero publicly in 2009, which almost threw us into bankruptcy. If I could do it all over again I would have rolled it out in phases. You don’t have to go all in, all at once.

A Lot to Learn About Nothing to Lose-By: Ryan Blair-Part #1

Here is an article that was written for Forbes Magazine by my dear friend, and our CEO Ryan Blair!

I’ve built my career as a start-up entrepreneur. So far over my lifetime I’ve created seven business enterprises, some that I’ve sold for millions, and a few that didn’t. One thing that I learned from my ups and downs is that my most solid success came when I used a mantra that I adopted when I was a kid living in poverty. The mantra is—nothing to lose.

When I was a kid, the neighborhood where I lived was run by gangs. In this environment we struggled for dominance and survival; we faced cops, rival gangs, prison…but the thing we used to worry the most about were guys who acted like they had nothing to lose.

I saw nothing to lose as an invincible power. The trump card. When I got older, I recognized the business world as a similar competitive environment, and when I applied this mantra and carried it as a mentality from start-up to exit, I would always win. I even wrote a New York Times bestseller about it.

Ironically, in my position today, playing like I have nothing to lose is dangerous. My company has thousands of people that depend on it for their incomes. That’s a lot to lose. Steve Jobs was noted for saying that sometimes you have to “bet the company” or, in other words, play like you have nothing to lose. And I agree, as long as you keep in mind that you had better bet smart, and bet correctly.

I’ve been on all sides of the deal, from raising seed venture capital to my current role as CEO of a division of a public company that did $96M in revenue in the 4th quarter of last year. I know very well the decision making, and risks and rewards associated with going from having nothing to lose, to everything to lose. Let’s start with the decision-making first. Here are some insights on what I like to call the NTL vs. ETL (nothing to lose vs. everything to lose) decision tree.

• First I ask myself, “is this a ‘bet the company decision?”

Often you don’t realize the decision you’re trying to make is a ‘bet the company decision.’ So I use a simple trick to determine the potential cost of a decision: I price tag it. This is easy if I’m signing a $50 million dollar purchase order for inventory and the material impact of making a bad inventory decision is self-explanatory, however sometimes your gut will say one thing and the people around you will say another.

This is where many entrepreneurs fail to act, or rather, to think. If you ask yourself the question—is this a bet the company decision—and the answer is yes, then stop the train and evaluate every detail no matter how mundane or routine the actual task is or how much the experts around you tell you it’s ‘no big deal.’

3 Tips for Conquering Mind Clutter

SUCCESS Publisher Darren Hardy's own productivity tips.

1. Unwind on the Way Home

The speech, pace, energy is different at the office then at home. Utilize your drive home to help you change gears and make the transition. Don't continue the over stimulation by listening to news or talking on your cell phone. By keeping quiet your vital signs will slow down and you can think about how you want to spend time with your family. Push away thoughts of the day and be ready for casual conversation at home.

2. Use other parts of brain

As the saying goes, "all work, no play makes Jack a dull boy" Have things going on at home that stimulates other parts of your brain. For most of us keyed-up, type-A personalities sometimes doing nothing is not remedy, many times it is doing something fun and stimulating to other parts of our brain giving our work brain a rest.

3. Schedule time with friends

What gets put on your calendar gets done. You have to make your friends a priority. The best way to ensure they are is to officially get them on your calendar. Make an appointment once a week to have lunch or dinner with a friend. Also every time you meet, coordinate your schedules on the spot for your next get-together. - See more at: http://www.success.com/article/3-tips-for-conquering-mind-clutter#sthash.ERbkV3jV.dpuf

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part #6

Value Time Off

How does America regain its supremacy in the productive world? How do you improve your personal productivity? Go on vacation.

Americans failed to take 438 million vacation days in 2007, according to Harris Interactive research group. That’s more than any other industrialized nation. The result is that America ranks No. 1 in depression and mental health problems.

Americans are experiencing burnout, reduced productivity, diminished creativity, failed relationships, and stress or stress-related ailments, such as depression, heart disease and stomach ulcers, in record levels.

Our puritanical conditioning—being valued on how “hard” we work—as well as our fear of being replaced or left behind, and our addiction to always being “busy” are not only destroying our mental and physical health, but destroying our creative productivity.

This is especially true in our new global economy, where our advantage and future lie in being knowledge workers, not laborers. Your future lies between your ears—in your mind and your ability to think creatively, innovatively and productively.

When you are working 80 hours a week, your mind gets cluttered and stale. Like a pressure cooker, if you don’t give your mind some time to clear some steam out, it will boil over, causing ailments and loss of effectiveness and real productivity. I am not suggesting you need to take a vacation to better “enjoy life,” “find your bliss” or have “life balance”; I am telling you time off is an important component of hard-core achievement and productivity.

I hope you will take the time to stop and examine your own life and incorporate these principles into your daily routine on your journey to super achievement. These steps, if applied, will help you transform your productivity, performance and lifestyle. Remember: It’s not what you know; it’s what you do. The actions you take with regard to information you learn is where the power of change and transformation resides.

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part#5

The Management of Time There is one force in our life that makes everyone equal. How you handle and treat this force is the single most important contributor to the income you will have and the lifestyle you will lead. This is why Jim Rohn called it the single “best-kept secret of the rich.” The secret? The management of time. Time is life’s most precious commodity, and how it is managed separates the rich from the poor.

When I interviewed Dr. Oz for the October 2008 SUCCESS DualDisc, I asked for his secret to managing time. He performs 250 open-heart surgeries a year and is a professor; a chairman of surgery; a medical program director; a prolific writer; a regular on TV and radio, including Oprah; and he’s now launching his own TV show. Oh, and he is also a devoted husband and father of four. What he said was one of the best distinctions about time management I have ever heard:“It’s not about time management. It’s about energy management. The things you do in your life should give you that zest for life.”

Look for ways to get a better “Return on Energy” (ROE). If you are doing a good job at efficiently and effectively using your time, but you’re doing things that drain your life force and zap your joy, what good are you doing? You will immediately know if you should be spending your time on something if you ask yourself whether it gives you energy or takes it away. Spend more time on what gives you energy, and guard against, eliminate, delegate or mitigate your time on those things that deplete your energy.

The Art of Delegation

One of the greatest success disciplines of superachievers is delegation. Learn to ask for help. Learn to trust and empower others to accomplish what needs to be done.

I love watching movies on kings, presidents, generals and industrialists. You will observe something very interesting: You don’t ever see them in front of a computer, filing, cleaning, balancing their checkbook or doing much of anything, but thinking, making decisions and directing. That is the highest and best use of their genius.

When you can spend most of your day using your mind and empowering others to execute your ideas, you will become wealthy and powerful beyond your imagination.

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part#4

You get in life what you tolerate. This is one of the greatest success philosophies I’ve ever heard. Put another way, you will get in life what you accept and expect you are worthy of. If you tolerate disrespect, you will be disrespected. If you tolerate being underpaid and overworked, that will continue for you. If you tolerate being overweight, tired and perpetually sick, you will be. Life will organize around the standards you set for yourself. Some think they are the victim of other people’s behavior, but in actuality, we have ultimate control over how people treat us.

Study More

Knowledge is not power; it is the potential of power. What you do with knowledge is where the power lies.

Here is the conundrum: For any SUCCESS reader, learning is not what welack; in fact, it might be what’s bottlenecking us.

We might be reading a lot, seemingly learning a lot, but never really stopping long enough to digest, contemplate, act, review and improve on anything we have just learned.

Learning is not the problem; lack of real study and implementation is. Don’t just read a book and put it down. Read it, summarize the key ideas and then write out how you are going to implement those ideas into your life. Now act, review and improve.Stick with the ideas in that book until you realize some transformation in its implementation.

Stay Consistent

I used to get frustrated when starting a new venture and then seeing the competition leap out in front and get off to a fast and successful start. Then I found the single discipline that gave me the advantage to beat anybody at almost anything—consistency.

A lot of people get gung-ho about new goals or achievements and charge out of the gate in an explosion of activity that eventually flares out. If you make a commitment to consistency, you’ll not only catch your competitors, but you’ll usually leave them in the dust every time. I do what I have found most people cannot—stay consistent.

Lack of consistency is the subtle but great stealer of dreams and desires. The stop-and-start process is what kills progress in any pursuit. It is probably one of the greatest reasons people don’t ultimately achieve their goals and end up living lives of discontent, frustration and disappointment.

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part #3

Create and Protect Your Boundaries

For a workaholic, these are dangerous times. The natural boundaries of time allocated to work, personal and family have been obliterated. Technology has penetrated the walled garden separating these important segments of our lives. This breach provides for constant intrusions on our attention, keeping us constantly connected and at the mercy of a stream of information and demands.

Put a junk filter on your life. To filter incoming requests, it is important to first become clear on what you want. Determine your values. Who are you? Who do you want to become? What is most important to you in life? What direction do you want your life to take?

Focus on your goals. What are your three most important goals for the year? This month? This week? Today?

Identify what and who is important. Decide what areas of your life you want to develop and expand, and then leave room for it.

After identifying your values, goals and priorities, put a junk filter on everything else and keep it out of your inbox and off your to-do list.

Just say NO. There is no middle ground here. This is one of the most important disciplines you can develop to unhook yourself from your addictions. If you aren’t comfortable with saying “no,” say “no, thank you.” People most often over commit because they try to please everyone.

Remember that whenever you say “yes,” you’re also saying “no” to something else in regard to your objectives and goals. You don’t make time; you only trade it. Be a better trader.

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part #2

Learn to Stop Doing We all have our to-do lists that seem to keep growing even as you check off some tasks. Your workdays get longer, your time with family dwindles, and you find that even though you are in constant motion, you’re really standing still.

Reevaluate how you spend your time and stop doing the time-wasters. The only way you can gain more time is to stop doing something. If you don’t like what your life has become or you want to take your life and productivity to the next level, you need to figure out what you can stop doing so that you can concentrate on what you should be doing to get better results in your life.

We’ve all heard about the Pareto Principle, the 80/20 rule that 20 percent of your activity produces 80 percent of your income. Simply put, this means you should spend 80 percent of your time on the 20 percent of your activities responsible for driving your income. Figure out what your 80 percent activities are, and stop doing those so you can focus more time on the 20 percent activities that make the real difference in your results and income.

Imagine this: If you just spent 40 percent on your high-value activities, you could double your income. Spend 60 percent or even 80 percent, and you could multiply your income by four times.

Accomplish More by Doing Less By: Darren Hardy-Part #1

7 Productivity Strategies of the Superachiever

SUCCESS has profiled some of today’s greatest achievers—Donald Trump, Richard Branson, Maria Shriver, Dr. Mehmet Oz, Arnold Palmer, Tony Hawk, John Wooden and Colin Powell, among many others. As I’ve considered what they’ve accomplished in their lifetimes, I’ve thought about why many of the rest of us work harder and put in longer hours without achieving the same big results. What makes the difference? Here is my problem, and maybe yours: I am an addict. My drug is constant movement, constant communication, continual achievement—the long list of to-dos and completed tasks at the end of the day. It’s a wonderful high. But this behavior of constant busyness can actually take you off course from your high-value goals; tax your physical, psychological and emotional system; and even damage or destroy relationships. I spent some time contemplating my goals, knowing I wanted to make quantum leaps in many areas of my life, not just incremental improvements. After a great deal of thought, I realized the key is not to do more or work harder; the key is actually to find ways to do less and think more, to be less busy and more productive. In this, I have struck upon the very secret to what separates the super achievers from the rest of us. I’ve started applying this strategy in my own life and work. And, I’d like to share with you the principles I have found to move from stress-filled “success” to super achievement and obtain a more balanced lifestyle filled with joy, harmony and personal fulfillment.

Why the Cheap Will Never Get Rich By: Robert Kiyosaki-Part #2

My Point of View

What follows are some thoughts on why my friend will probably never get ahead financially -- especially in this market.

1. She and her husband have college degrees but zero financial education. Even worse, neither plans to attend any investment classes. Choosing to remain financially uneducated has caused them to miss out on the greatest bull and bear markets in history. As my rich dad often said, "What you don't know keeps you poor."

2. She is too emotional. In the world of money and investing, you must learn to control your emotions. When you think about it, three of our biggest financial decisions in life are made at times of peak emotional excitement: deciding to get married, buying a home, and having kids.

My dad often said, "High emotions, low intelligence." To be rich, you need to see the good and the bad, the short- and long-term consequences of your decisions. Obviously, this is easier said than done, but it's key to building wealth.

3. She doesn't know the difference between advice from rich people and advice from sales people. Most people get their financial advice from the latter -- people who profit even if you lose. One reason why financial education is so important is because it helps you know the difference between good and bad advice.

As the current crisis demonstrates, our schools teach very little about money management. Millions of people are living in fear because they followed conventional wisdom: Go to school, get a job, work hard, save money, buy a house, get out of debt, and invest for the long term in a well-diversified portfolio of mutual funds. Many people who followed this financial prescription are not sleeping at night. They need a new plan. Had they sought out a little financial education, they might not be entangled in this mess.

A Thank You to Jon Stewart

Speaking of finance experts, I personally want to thank Jon Stewart of 'The Daily Show' for taking on Jim Cramer and CNBC. Jon Stewart did an incredible job of representing the millions of people all over the world who have lost their savings in the market. He was right in saying he thought it "disingenuous" to advise people to invest for the long term through their retirement plans while knowing full well that traders could steal Americans' retirement money by trading in and out of the market. Most traders like Cramer realize that investing in mutual funds for the long term is financial suicide. Cramer should have spoken up, but we all know why CNBC won't let him tell the truth. If he did, the station's advertisers would leave. While I applaud Cramer for going on 'The Daily Show' and facing the music, I'm afraid he was marginalized by Stewart -- certainly outgunned -- and he has lost his credibility. He may pay an even bigger price if the SEC decides to dig deeper. Jim Cramer is a very smart man. I watch his show. I just do not follow his advice. In closing, I will say what I have said for years: We need financial education in our schools. Without it, we cannot tell the good advice from the bad.

Why the Cheap Will Never Get Rich By: Robert Kiyosaki-Part #1

The other day a friend of mine approached me excitedly, saying, "I found the house of my dreams. It's in foreclosure and the bank will sell it to me for a great price."

"How good is the price?" I asked.

"Just before the real estate market crashed, the seller was asking $780,000 for the property. Today, I can buy it from the bank for $215,000. What do you think?" she asked.

"How would I know?" I replied. "All you've given me is the price."

"Yes!" she squealed. "Now my husband and I can afford it."

"Only cheap people buy on price," I replied. "Just because something is cheap doesn't mean it's worth the cost."

I then explained to her one of my most basic money principles: I buy value. I will pay more for value. If I don't like the price, I simply pass. If the seller wants to sell, he will come back with a better price. I let him tell me what he will accept. I know some people love to haggle; personally, I don't. If a person wants to sell, they will sell. If I feel what I am buying is of value, I'll pay the price. Value rather than price has made me rich.

Against my advice, my friend sought financing for her "dream" home.

Fortunately, the bank turned her down. The house was on a busy street in a deteriorating neighborhood. The high school four blocks away was one of the most dangerous schools in the city. Her son and daughter would either have to go to private school or take karate lessons. She is now looking for a cheaper house to buy and has asked her father, who is retired, for help with the down payment. If her past is a crystal ball to her future, she will likely always be cheap and poor, even though she is a good, kind, educated, hard-working person.
