Goal Check with Jim Rohn

Sometimes it's not whether you've accomplished your goals, it's how.

What goals did you set at the start of this year? Have you accomplished them? Personal development legend Jim Rohn says it's ok if you haven't yet achieved your goals. The more important question to ask is if you've started.

“The real value in setting goals is not in their achievement. The acquisition of the things you want is strictly secondary. The major reason for setting goals is to compel you to become the person it takes to achieve them,” Rohn says. Say you want to be a millionaire. The greatest value to becoming one is actually not the million dollars. (Seriously!) “The greatest value is in the skills, knowledge, discipline and leadership qualities you’ll develop in reaching that elevated status,” Rohn says.

Answer this question: What kind of person will you have to become to get all you want? Write down the kinds of skills you’ll need to develop and the knowledge you’ll need to gain. Your answers might give you some new goals for your personal development. Work on your goals. Your ability will grow to match your dreams. “This is the magic of goal setting. The more you work on your goals, the more new opportunities will present themselves to you,” Rohn says.

You can make big changes in your life. “You can make startling changes you can’t even conceive of right now, if you just give yourself half a chance.”

Tips on Out-Preparing Your Competition By: Darren Hardy

Tips on Out-Preparing Your Competition

By failing to prepare you are are preparing to fail.

"Before everything else, getting ready is the secret to success. "—Henry Ford
Planning and preparation will give you a 10-times greater chance to achieve your goals. It will reduce wasted time and effort, while improving and maximizing results.
The book Learning to Think Strategically explains how Japanese executives are required to block out at least two hours a day when they simply do nothing but think. No phone calls, computers or paperwork, no interruptions and no exceptions.
During this time they are asked to stop their movement, think through the actions they are to take that day, over the next 90 days and for the next five years. They plan and assess the strategic value of their actions and the actions of their team and organization before moving further. This process allows them to constantly stay on strategy, dismiss distracting projects and continually operate at the highest level possible.

"One important key to success is self-confidence. An important key to self-confidence is preparation.""—Arthur Ashe

Here are four ways to out-prepare your competition:

1. Study: This is the advantage that Jamie Moyer and so many other superachievers exercise better than their competition and the rest of us. While others are filling their time with entertainment and escapism, superachievers are studying and improving their craft. Having more knowledge, data, background and intelligence will always give you the upper hand in any situation.

2. Develop: Develop the skills necessary to achieve excellence in your game. Brian Tracy explains that every skill you need to succeed is learnable. There is nothing you cannot learn and master to achieve anything you want in business and in life.

3. Practice:Tiger Woods was interviewed on the Golf Channel and was asked what he thought was the key to his success. His answer: practice. He gave away his secret when he said it wasn't just the time he put into practice, rather what he put into the time of practice. To practice, many golfers will go out and hit a thousand golf balls on the range, much of the time only reinforcing many bad patterns and problems in their swing. Tiger explained how he and his coach study, analyze and refine every swing, seeking to get as close to "perfect practice" as possible.

4. Play the Game in Your Head First: Before making a presentation, an important phone call or having an important meeting, play the event out in your head exactly as you want it to happen first. It is amazing how your posture, energy and expectation will change, and your performance will rise to meet it. Try it. - See more at: http://www.success.com/article/tips-on-out-preparing-your-competition#sthash.eh0R6qUj.dpuf

Change Begins With Choice By: Jim Rohn

Any day we wish; we can discipline ourselves to make important changes in our lives. Any day we wish; we can open the book that will open our mind to new knowledge. Any day we wish; we can start a new activity. Any day we wish; we can start the process of life change. We can do it immediately, or next week, or next month, or next year.

We can also do nothing. We can pretend rather than perform. And if the idea of having to change ourselves makes us uncomfortable, we can remain as we are. We can choose rest over labor, entertainment over education, delusion over truth, and doubt over confidence. The choices are ours to make. But while we curse the effect, we continue to nourish the cause.

As Shakespeare uniquely observed, ""The fault is not in the stars, but in ourselves."" We created our circumstances by our past choices. We have both the ability and the responsibility to make better choices beginning today. Those who are in search of the good life do not need more answers or more time to think things over to reach better conclusions. They need the truth.

They need the whole truth. And they need nothing but the truth. We cannot allow our errors in judgment, repeated every day, to lead us down the wrong path. We must keep coming back to those basics that make the biggest difference in how our life works out. And then we must make the very choices that will bring life, happiness and joy into our daily lives.

And if I may be so bold to offer my last piece of advice for someone seeking and needing to make changes in their life - If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree. You have the ability to totally transform every area in your life - and it all begins with your very own power of choice.

The Mechanics of How to Proceed By: Napoleon Hill

The Mechanics of How to Proceed
by Napoleon Hill

You know that you will probably never feel that you are completely ready to start any project. There will always be something else you could do in preparation for your take-off. But if you start where you stand and work with whatever tools you have at hand, other and better goals will reveal themselves as you move forward.
Write out a clear, concise statement of your goal, just as though you were writing a letter to a friend, explaining what it is you really desire from life. List the benefits which will result either during the process or after attainment of your major goal. For example:
1. List the information or knowledge you desire to acquire.
2. List the kind of work you desire to do.
3. List the kind of personality you desire to be.
4. Write down how much you desire to earn and receive each year.
5. List the places you desire to visit and see.
6. List the skills, arts, crafts, and sciences you desire to master.
As you list these, write out a separate statement of the motive which prompts each desire. Each one of us, as a normal human being, does everything he does in response to some one or more of the ten basic motives. Relate each one of the elements in your objective to some strong motive. This will enable you to develop a burning desire behind it and continually impress your subconscious mind until it has a complete preoccupation with the attainment of your aims and purposes.

Mastering Mental Chatter By: Darren Hardy

How to Gain Control of Information Flooding Your Brain

Here are four suggestions to get in control of the information you allow into your head:

1: Cut the Cord. Most of what passes for news is negative, sensational and appalling and has no contribution to your personal goals in life. Stop watching any broadcast TV, don't read the newspapers and don't listen to news radio.

2: Selective Listening. Set up RSS feeds to pull information on specifically what you need/want to read about. Register for newsletters or blog updates on topics and subjects that are relevant to your objectives. Once they become unproductive then unsubscribe.

3: Low-Information Diet. If you aren't comfortable getting only the most productive and relevant information you need to be more successful, then at least put yourself on a low-information diet. Find 15 minutes a day to catch up with national and world news updates—whether through a favorite news aggregator online, newspaper or single radio program—then don't overconsume.

4: Mind Your E2E Ratio. What is the primary difference between the 5 percent who are wealthy and those who are not? The 95 percent focus their attention and extra time on entertainment while the 5 percent look to spend their extra time on education. Evaluate yourself: How much time do you spend on entertainment and how much on education? The imbalance of this equation could be the reason your life isn't where you want it to be.

5 Tips to Radically Reduce Stress

Here is a great article on how to reduce stress, written by my good friend/mentor Darren Hardy!

1.  Compartmentalize. The problem for most people is they are worried about everything all at once, all the time. I break what I’m concerned about into time chunks. If I have an important presentation on Tuesday, I schedule time to begin thinking about it on Monday at noon. This way I don’t “stress” about it all weekend long.
2.  Say no. Nancy (Reagan, that is) was right: Just say, “NO!” Today we have more time-saving technologies to make our lives more convenient, yet we are the busiest (and most stressed-out) society in history! Studies show that life for families a hundred years ago was a lot less stressful, when we didn’t have 90 percent of the so-called conveniences we have today. Yes, today we get more stuff done and we collect more things in our garages, closets and attics, but we are not any happier. We are over-obligated and over-scheduled. Take back control of your life by learning to say “NO!”… or at least, “No thank you.”
3.  Feel it… really feel it. Most everyone spends the majority of their time trying to avoid painful emotions. Here is the irony of that: What you try to avoid expands in its power. Or put another way, what you resist, persists. “Whatever you avoid will come back. The more you avoid, the stronger it will return.” –Deepak Chopra
4.  End the love affair. You love the pain of your emotions. How do we know? You keep creating them. You are a creative being. There is nothing in your life you have not created. You are the cause of every effect you are experiencing right now. Frightening, but true. You have either attracted the circumstances that have caused you pain or you have just decided to CALL them painful. Nothing is painful in and of itself. Pain is a result of your thoughts about it. What one calls painful another calls enjoyable. Pain results from a judgment you have made about something. Remove the judgment and the pain disappears. You could decide to have what you call painful to be joyful if you wanted, simply by deciding it to be. You could also stop attracting circumstances in your life that cause you pain, but you don’t. Why? Because you love the feeling!
5.  MOVE! Perform an exercism. That’s right. Exercise the stress out of you. You know the mind-body connection to your health! Just as a cut on your finger will aggravate your mental concentration, so will collecting mental battle wounds and pressures all day drag your body down. You store your mental stress in your body. The only way to get the stress out of your mind is to get it out of your body. Not only does exercise keep you looking good in that skimpy swimsuit – and from dropping dead of coronary artery disease – but it also is the key to maintaining your energy, and to staying in psychological and mental balance.

Courtesy by Napoleon Hill

Someone has said that courtesy is the cheapest, yet the most profitable, of all traits of a pleasing personality. This may be an exaggeration, but it is not an overstatement to say that courtesy is an essential trait of personality without which no one may become pleasing to his associates.
As to its price, we must admit that it is absolutely free. All it costs is: a positive mental attitude, sincerity of purpose, consideration for the rights and feelings of others, and a willingness to share your blessings with your fellowmen. Observe how all of these principles are interrelated so that the development of one leads to the achievement of others.
Courtesy is the habit of respecting other people’s rights and feelings under all circumstances; the habit of going out of your way to help a less fortunate person whenever possible; the habit of rendering useful service without the expectation of direct reward; and last, but not least, the habit of controlling selfishness, greed, envy and hatred.
Courtesy is a reflection of the spirit of fellowship without which no one may have dependable friends. It will often serve as an irresistible force with which one may disarm enemies and antagonists.

Entrepreneurs: Are You Willing to Hire People Smarter than You? By: Ryan Blair Part #3

Building a Unified Company Culture
. If you’re worried about how much you make a year as a business owner compared to what your employees are making, you’re being employee minded. You need to be entrepreneurially minded and create a company culture that is also entrepreneurially minded.

To maintain that kind of chemistry, you have to be very selective about whom you bring aboard. A person who brings a condescending air, any kind of laziness, or a hostile attitude to the group can completely destroy the positive atmosphere you’ve worked so hard to create.

When I worked for my stepfather, I watched his business struggle because he continuously brought on the cheapest help he could hire, whether the people fit with his established team or not. He never took the time to screen for the right attitude, work ethic, or personality that would accentuate and add to the talent he already had in his company.

As a result, the company never grew beyond my stepfather’s talents, simply because he never brought on anyone more talented than he was.

Entrepreneurs: Are You Willing to Hire People Smarter than You? By: Ryan Blair Part #2

Paying Top Earners Accordingly.
Good people don’t take a job just for salary. They take a job for camaraderie, learning opportunity, or because of their career direction. As the CEO, your job is to clearly articulate those elements you offer your employees that are not money oriented, so that you can attract the best of the best talent without necessarily having to pay the highest wages. In almost every great company I have studied, the elements that recruited the candidates were what led to that company’s greatness. And in every failed company I’ve studied, it was a lack of attention to those elements that led to its failure.

At ViSalus, we spent so much time building the sales culture that now we find ourselves shifting gears to work on building the internal employee culture, so we can grow our company into a great one. I didn’t pay much attention early on to the employee culture because I was focused on building the sales culture in the field.

The sales culture is responsible for the current growth, and the salespeople should be greeted as heroes because they’re the ones generating the revenue that pays everyone else’s salary, but the one thing that could stop the rate of growth at this point is not building the employee culture to complement the sales culture. I’ve seen some businesses in my industry fail because employees and management actually grow to hate the very people who are generating the revenue.

Early on in my career, I couldn’t fathom hiring people who were more expensive than I was, but one time a venture capitalist, realizing I was weak in the finance area, required that I hire a world-class CFO at a rate significantly higher than I was making. It was humbling, but I knew this individual was the best person for the job, and I looked at it as an investment in the growth of our company. I never regretted that decision.

One of our board members, Bob Dilworth, told me that when he was CEO of Zenith, his top salespeople made significantly more than he did. I was shocked. “They make twice as much as you,” he told me. “That’s when you know you got it right.”

Several of our distributors at ViSalus make more than a million dollars a year, and there is no employee, including myself, who makes anywhere near that. As CEO, you have to remember that all of these talented, well-compensated people are building your equity and your profits, and that contributes to your compensation.

Entrepreneurs: Are You Willing to Hire People Smarter than You? By: Ryan Blair Part #1

By: Ryan Blair

Excerpted from NOTHING TO LOSE, EVERYTHING TO GAIN by Ryan Blair. Published by Portfolio/Penguin. Copyright (c) Ryan Blair, 2010, 2011.

I’ve always believed that my most valuable asset is the quality of the people I’ve been able to attract and recruit for my companies. If you surround yourself with tremendous talent, you will find yourself challenged and stretched to levels you never imagined.

Creating Value, Hiring Value.
It is my goal to be in awe of every person I hire. I want to see traits in her or him that are more dynamic or more positive than my own abilities in that area, because I know that simply by working with that person, I will be able to grow and the company will prosper, thanks to this continuous reach for improvement.

I’ve seen entrepreneurs stunt their business growth because they were afraid to hire people smarter than they were. Bill Gates once said in an interview that the secret to his success was that he hired people smarter than he was, and he’s pretty smart.

Zig Ziglar: Defining Success By: Erin K. Casey-Part #3

Action → Don’t confuse activity with accomplishment. You must have specific, clearly identified objectives. In the How to Stay Motivated audio program, Ziglar advises listeners to write down everything they want to do, be or have. Once you’ve created your list, pick five things you want to accomplish this year and outline a plan for each by defining daily, weekly and monthly targets. Then get started!

Here is a great article I found about Zig Ziglar. Written by: Erin K. Casey in Success Magazine! This is part #3 of the article.

Take a (Mental) Bath Every Day

Getting motivated to improve in any one of these eight areas of life is relatively easy. But staying motivated enough to maintain the behaviors required to realize real change is challenging.

Ziglar illustrates the point by recounting the story of going to the gym on Jan. 2 one year. Normally, finding a place to park wasn’t an issue, nor was finding an empty workout bench or treadmill. But on his first visit of the new year, he was forced to park at the back of the lot and had to wait in line to use the equipment. When he questioned the trainer at the front desk about the influx of patrons, he was told not to worry and that things would go back to normal in about three weeks. Sure enough, before three weeks had passed, there were once again plenty of vacant spaces in the parking lot and several empty workout benches.

We are easily motivated to start a life-improvement project, but staying motivated takes work. Ziglar comments that people frequently complain to him that the effects of motivational seminars, books and audios don’t last. His response: “Neither does bathing; that’s why we recommend it daily.”

In his Christian Motivation for Daily Living audio program, Ziglar references a study that indicates 80 percent of what our minds take in each day is negative. Be it from talk radio or what Ziglar refers to as the “income suppressant” (aka the television), or the gripes and sour attitudes of our friends, co-workers, family members and acquaintances, we are inundated with negative thoughts, comments and messages. We can spend a full day at a motivational seminar or sales conference and get pumped with enthusiasm. But, as soon as we step out into the “real world,” the onslaught of negativity is akin to having someone dump garbage into our freshly cleaned mind.

“If I were to come into your home with a pail of garbage and dump it on your living room floor, we would have problems—fast,” Ziglar writes in See You at the Top. “The person who dumps garbage into your mind will do you considerably more harm than the person who dumps garbage on your floor, because each load of mind garbage negatively impacts your possibilities and lowers your expectations.”

To offset the negativity and to stay motivated to reach our goals, continual affirmations and belief-building messages must be part of our daily routine. That’s why, in addition to practicing positive self-talk, Ziglar recommends listening to and reading motivational materials repeatedly and regularly. “You are what you are and where you are because of what’s gone into your mind,” he says. “You can change what you are, you can change where you are, by changing what goes into your mind.”

Action → Block out 30 minutes a day (at a minimum) to read or listen to a positive, inspiring or motivational message. Doing so will help you stay committed to your goals and bolster your belief in your ability to achieve them.
